Alpine is considering replacing rookie Jack Doohan with reserve driver Franco Colapinto before the next Formula 1 race in Imola, following a string of underwhelming performances and on-track incidents by the Australian.

Despite showing occasional promise, including outqualifying Pierre Gasly in Miami, Doohan’s crash with Liam Lawson in that race and a major practice crash in Suzuka have raised concerns. Alpine currently sits ninth in the constructors’ standings, with Gasly’s seventh-place in Bahrain the team’s only notable result.

Meanwhile, Colapinto, who joined Alpine from Williams over the off-season, has been in the spotlight due to his strong performances in a nine-race stint with Williams last year. Though he also had some crashes, the 21-year-old impressed enough to draw brief interest from Red Bull before signing with Alpine.

Speculation intensified after a YPF executive claimed Colapinto would race in Imola—a statement later walked back. Team boss Oliver Oakes downplayed the rumors but admitted Doohan’s place is under constant evaluation.

With a triple-header starting in Imola, Alpine could make a decision soon. Colapinto is already well-prepared through simulation and testing, and senior team advisor Flavio Briatore reportedly supports giving him a shot in the near future.
